The voyage towards autonomous ships and boats
The AI Research Scientist at Saab's Business Area Kockums, Mårten Lager, recently finished his PhD within WASP – Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program. This is Sweden's largest research project ever, focusing on supporting Swedish industry in areas such as AI and autonomous systems. The program is aiming to produce 600 PhDs, with 150 sprung from the industry.

Working with IT-architecture, Mårten Lager found himself at times to be frustrated by his own lack of knowledge in the area of AI. "When I got the chance to participate in this program, it was therefore an easy decision to make", said Mårten.

"I really enjoy being back at Kockums now, and I am looking forward to see how our products will use these new technologies to meet the requirements for new capabilities. With a background as a submarine officer, I can imagine how the new technologies will influence the ways the crew is working. The computers will be able to do more tasks, and the crew will need to evolve with the technology", said Mårten.
