Master Thesis, 30 HP: Advanced CW waveforms for bistatic radar

Your role

Background

Bistatic radar detects and localizes targets with a transmitter and receiver in different locations. The receiver determines how long it takes to receive the reflected radar signal and calculates range based on the delay, the speed of light, and the positions of the transmitter and receiver. Bistatic radar has advantages over monostatic radar – the receiver is virtually undetectable and harder to jam, and current stealth techniques are less effective against bistatic radar systems.

The performance of the bistatic radar depends heavily on what waveform or signal modulation the transmitter uses. A continuous signal is beneficial since it can use a lower peak power to be harder to detect, but can reduce performance. Making the waveform noise-like instead of structured and repeating makes it even harder to detect, but can also reduce performance. Furthermore, if multiple transmitters are used at the same time, their waveforms must be sufficiently distinct while not reducing their individual performance too much. Finally, we also want to be able to include information in the waveform, so that the transmitters can add metadata such as their identity and current location if they move around.

Selecting the right waveforms is a game of trade-offs, no waveform is the best in all cases, but having a good objective basis to make the correct trade-off for a certain situation can be the difference between a threat being detected and remaining undetected until it’s too late. 

Description of the master thesis

You will explore and develop waveforms or sets of waveforms for bistatic CW radar, and evaluate their radar performance, their ability to be used with multiple transmitters, and their ability to carry information without sacrificing performance.

Besides mathematical performance metrics you can also test waveforms in simulations, and it may be possible to test selected waveforms in real world measurements.

The main question of the thesis is:

  • How does the radar performance and information capacity of different CW waveform sets compare, and what metrics best measure this?

Your profile

This Master Thesis is suitable for one motivated math or engineering student with experience in MATLAB or Python, and an interest in signal processing, digital communications, and radar.

Taking or having taken a course in digital communications is strongly recommended.

This position requires that you pass a security vetting based on the current regulations around/of security protection. For positions requiring security clearance additional obligations on citizenship may apply.
