Bachelor Thesis, 22.5 HP: Realistic Weather Simulation for Enhanced Tactical Training of Naval Crews

Helsingborg,
Sweden
Closing date: 14 December 2024

We are offering an exciting opportunity for motivated students to develop a Bachelor Thesis focused on creating a weather simulation prototype capable of processing historical weather forecast data as input data and simulating real-time weather conditions. The primary goal of this project is to enhance the resolution of the simulation to match the level of detail needed for simulated meteorological sensors to report live results.

Your role

Background

The thesis will involve developing a model that reads weather data from historical weather forecasts, processes it, and then simulates weather conditions with a high enough resolution for sensors to report real-time data, such as temperature, humidity, wind speed, and pressure. You will also be required to create a detailed report documenting your methods, findings, and the implementation process.

Thesis Objective:

The goal of this thesis is to design and implement a weather simulation model that:

  • Uses historical weather forecast data as the primary data source for weather variables.
  • Simulates weather conditions at a fine resolution suitable for real-time sensor data reporting.
  • Generates realistic, dynamic weather data that could be used by meteorological sensors deployed in virtual environment (e.g., temperature, humidity, wind speed, etc.).
  • Includes a prototype of the simulation model.
  • Provides insights into the use of historical weather forecast data for simulating highly detailed weather models for real-time applications.

Description of the Bachelor Thesis

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prototype Development: Design and build a simulation prototype that can process historical weather forecast data and generate weather forecasts at a fine enough resolution for meteorological sensors to provide live data.
  • Data Processing: Develop methods to read and interpret historical weather forecast data to extract relevant meteorological data and adjust the resolution to simulate real-time sensor reporting.
  • Weather Simulation: Implement algorithms that simulate dynamic weather conditions (e.g., wind, temperature, pressure) at a spatial and temporal resolution sufficient for sensor applications.
  • Sensor Simulation: Integrate simulated sensors into the prototype to mimic real-time data reporting and visualize the simulation results (e.g., temperature, pressure, wind).
  • Report Writing: Document the project in a detailed report, including an explanation of the simulation methodology, the role of historical weather forecast data, and the technical challenges encountered in simulating high-resolution weather data.
  • Prototype Evaluation: Test and validate the accuracy of the weather simulation by comparing results with real-world meteorological data, when available.

Your profile

This Bachelor Thesis is suitable for one or two students with a passion for cutting-edge technology and national security.

Desired Qualifications:

  • You are at the end of your Computer Science and Engineering program (or equivalent) and about to start your Bachelor Thesis work for 22.5 HP.
  • Experience working with weather forecast data is a plus, but not mandatory (training can be provided).
  • Strong programming skills in languages such as C#, C++ or Java.
  • Experience with data processing libraries, as well as simulation tools and frameworks.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to handle large datasets and complex algorithms.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills to document the project in a clear, structured report.

This position requires that you pass a security vetting based on the current regulations around/of security protection. For positions requiring security clearance additional obligations on citizenship may apply.
