Saab receives order from Sweden for Giraffe 1X surface radar
End of August, Saab received an order from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) for the Giraffe 1X radar for one of Sweden’s Ground Based Air Defence (GBAD) solutions. The order includes Saab’s Giraffe 1X radar, associated command and control systems and integration to a Swedish GBAD solution. The radar will be installed on a Sisu GTP armoured vehicle.
The Giraffe 1X is a compact, high-performance 3D radar, ideally suited to provide situational awareness in the airspace. Giraffe 1X can be used as either a mobile, a deployable or a fixed asset for short-range surveillance and GBAD. Giraffe 1X has an exceptional small integration footprint. The total weight of the system is less than 150 kg, with the upper part weighing 100 kg. Giraffe 1X can detect fixed and rotary wing targets, fast missiles and RAM targets as well as small UAVs in high-clutter environments. It provides commanders with reliable target data for destroying them with firepower.
The lightweight multi-mission surveillance radar Giraffe 1X radar combines operational flexibility, multitasking and multi-purpose capability. Giraffe 1X provides swift understanding of the air situation, enabling immediate and effective response to changing threats, new tactics and shifting operational conditions.
Giraffe 1X at Olympic Games 2024
During the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, French authorities were taking no chances when it came to safety. Saab’s Giraffe 1X played an important role in monitoring the skies above athletes, spectators and officials during both the Olympics and Paralympics.
With the whole world watching the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, French authorities were taking no chances when it came to safety. Saab’s Giraffe 1X air surveillance radar played an important role in monitoring the skies above athletes, spectators and officials during both the Olympics and Paralympics.
The sensitivity of Giraffe 1X radars means they are able to clearly detect all aerial platforms and distinguish between birds and small UAVs – a crucial capability at a time when drones are cheap, widely available and increasingly being weaponised. In Paris, the Giraffe 1X system provided data on movements over the entire greater metropolitan area. French authorities used the two Giraffe 1X radars in combination with a range of other defence measures, including multiple ground-to-air missile systems, jet fighters and attack helicopters, according to the French Ministry of the Armed Forces.
