At Saab, we have many engineers, one of them is Sofia Sproge. She is a Software Developer in XR, Extended Reality, in the Simulators, Training and Support Systems department at the Gripen business unit.

Who are you?

"My name is Sofia Sproge, I am 26 years old, and my title is Software Developer and I work in the XR-center at Concept and Marketing Simulators at Saab in Linköping."

What are your tasks at Saab?

"With the help of XR, Extended Reality, we develop concepts for the future training systems and simulators for pilots and technicians. The technology we use is based on the fact that you can combine the “real world", for example a physical rig, with VR, Virtual Reality, and then train your scenarios for the Gripen in the VR glasses. My day-to-day work consists of programming, conducting user tests and also demos for customers and similar visits", explains Sofia.

What education do you have and why did you choose it?

"I have a degree of Master of Science in Media Technology and Engineering and I studied at Linköping University on campus Norrköping. I chose this education because I always liked graphic work, programming and technology in general."

What is unique about your job?

"I get to work with new technology that can revolutionize the training possibilities for pilots and technicians. With VR glasses, which are portable, you can easily and quickly train pilots on different scenarios. The tasks in my job varies a lot so you get the chance to develop in new areas continuously."

Why have you chosen Saab as an employer?

"I applied to Saab to first perform my Master Thesis since working with simulators was something that sounded interesting. I am now a Saab employee and I enjoy it very much. I think Saab gives me great opportunities to develop as it both has new technology and is a large established company."

Behind the scenes of a Gripen air-to-air photo-shoot

Executing a successful air-to-air photo-shoot requires quite a lot of planning and a bit of luck with the weather. At Saab Aeronautics communications department we made a formal request to the Swedish Air force to use one of their C-130 Hercules and a Gripen C aircraft to be able to shoot footage of the Gripen C and Gripen E flying together.

The Brazilian Gripen E aircraft with registration FAB 4100, dedicated to tests in Brazil, took part in a flight test campaign in Anápolis (GO) to assess the Infrared Search and Track (IRST), a passive long-range target detection sensor.
