Saab awarded contract for simulation software NNVO
Saab has been awarded a contract to develop and install a Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) simulator for the Dutch National Nautical Traffic Service Training (NNVO). The simulator will be up and running in January 2021 and will be supported with a five-year maintenance contract.
NNVO is a non-profit organisation that trains nautical traffic operators in the Netherlands, including staff of Rijkswaterstaat (Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management), Royal Netherlands Navy, Ports of Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Groningen, North Sea Port and The Hague municipal port authority. VTS operators are required to undertake regular training and exams to ensure their knowledge and skills are up-to-date.
Located at NNVO in Rotterdam, the advanced Saab simulator is user-friendly and enables instructors to prepare training to individual needs and to the requirements for traffic management in specific areas of the Netherlands. The ability to do this remotely saves much travel time for instructors who are stationed all across the country.
The advanced Saab system more than meets the functional specification of the Dutch nautical authorities. The look and feel of the simulator is close to operational reality because the dynamic behaviour of the current training scenarios have been converted in the Saab simulator. In addition, the system offers the flexibility to train using any combination of instructors and trainees.
Andreas Keller, Head of VTS training courses at NNVO states: "The arrival of a VTS simulator at NNVO is something we have wanted for a long time. Saab supplies most VTS systems in the Netherlands. The Saab simulator grants us more in-house flexibility and the simulations are as realistic and consistent as it gets.”
Saab will provide initial training and support to NNVO. This will include training in functional management to maintain the simulator, and technical and support management during the five-year maintenance contract.
Head of Saab Maritime Traffic Management, Tomas Hjelmberg said: “The NNVO simulator is a milestone for us as it will be used to train almost all VTS operators in the Netherlands. The simulator is a product of our ongoing R&D and its extensive use in the Netherlands will provide vital feedback for further development.”
