First Swedish Gripen E is airborne
The first flight with the Swedish Gripen E (designated 6002) has completed its debut flight as announced on 3rd December. The aircraft displayed a new camouflage pattern designed with three shades of grey, inspired by the Swedish Armed Forces M90 camouflage uniform.
The Gripen E fighter with the serial number 6002 took off for its maiden flight from a Saab factory’s runway in Linköping, Sweden. This test flight was dedicated to verify basic handling and flying qualities of the aircraft.
The first flight will be followed by more test flights with the purpose to approve the aircraft for same envelope as the previous Gripen E. After that 6002 will join the joint verification and validation programme together with the Swedish Armed Forces and FMV for further envelope expansion as well as testing of tactical system and sensors.
This is the fifth Gripen E to take flight. Saab has flown three prototypes (39-8, 39-9 and 39-10) in the previous years. The new Brazilian Gripen E also completed its maiden flight on 26th of August, 2019.
