Saab Delivers Next Generation AIS Ship Transponders Supporting VDES to Sternula
Saab has received an order to deliver 32 type approved R6 Supreme Automatic Identification System/ VHF Data Exchange System (AIS/VDES) ship transponders to the Danish company Sternula ApS.
The R6 Supreme AIS/VDES transponders will be type approved to the Class-A AIS standard and provide functionality to the next generation of global maritime communication services based on a VHF VDES.
The deliveries of transponders will occur from March 2022 to January 2023, including both terrestrial and satellite VDES functionality.

Sternula is a commercial provider of secure and global AIS 2.0 (VDES) connectivity for the maritime industry. The transponders will be used in VDES pilot projects with customers and in the MARIOT project.
VDES is a platform providing global authenticated and secure communication via satellite or via terrestrial networks. It will be a cornerstone in the International Maritime Organization e-Navigation vision for improved and secure, berth-to-berth, sea traffic management and the their goal to reduce the ship traffic emissions of greenhouse gases by 40% to 2030.
