Saab Brings Third SR-3 into Operation at Stockholm Arlanda Airport

Swedavia selected Saab to replace three aged Surface Movement Radars with the newest generation SR-3, benefitting from its easy installation and integration capabilities.

Saab’s Surface Movement Radar (SMR) team installed a new SR-3 this July at Stockholm Arlanda Airport, as part of a contract awarded by Swedavia in 2016 to install three SR-3 radars at the airport. In each of the three installations, the Saab team successfully removed the existing radar, installed the new SR-3 on the existing tower, and completed site acceptance testing for the SMR and integration with the existing Saab A-SMGCS (Advanced - Surface Movement Guidance & Control System). This was completed over a short span of eight days in each case.

The efficiency of Saab’s installation and integration teams, in conjunction with installation support from local contractor Eltel, enabled this project to be completed with minimal downtime.

“The combination of our experienced teams and Saab’s proven SMR product design allowed us to deliver not one but three low risk installations in near record time. This short system downtime is crucial to Swedavia and all of our customers around the world,” says Mike Gerry, head of business unit Air Traffic Management within Saab business area Industrial Products and Services.

“The installation has been very fast and smooth and carried out in a professional way by technicians from Saab and Eltel. Swedavia is very pleased with the collaboration with Saab and looks forward to continued cooperation. With this, Swedavia has now secured safe operation for many years to come,” says Per Arenhage, Chief Technical Officer at Swedavia.
