RBS15 Mk3 Surface-to-Surface Missile successfully fired
Saab Bofors Dynamics and Diehl BGT Defence successfully fired the latest generation Surface-to-Surface Missile RBS15 Mk3.
On Wednesday October 8 2008 the RBS15 Mk3 was successfully launched at a FMV test range in northern Sweden, witnessed by government delegations from several nations. This successful firing marks the end of the extensive verification of the new generation RBS15 Mk3.
Anti-ship mission at long range
The purpose of the test was to verify the complete function of the missile system, including the priming of the missile from the Missile Engagement Planning System, the target seeker capability and the high-G terminal phase manoeuvres. The new variable thrust turbojet engine was used to automatically adapt the speed to hit the target at a pre-defined time, as well as support the terminal manoeuvres with maximum thrust and speed.
The missile was launched from a Coastal Missile Battery truck, and primed to perform an anti-ship mission at long range.
The missile cruised over water in both fixed flight level control as well as automatic sea-state adaptation. The missile flew 165 km via 25 waypoints and it was primed to engage two ship targets, incl. re-attack, and one land target before hitting the final ship target.
The navigation system, using INS supported by military GPS, accurately followed the pre-planned trajectory and the final target impact, where the missile was controlled by the target seeker, was well within the requirement, proving the system performance in both the anti-ship as well as in the land attack mission.
The RBS15 Mk3 is a powerful, versatile Surface-to-Surface Missile system with a range of more than 200 km with the capability to combat ships as well as land targets. The RBS15 Mk3 System has been contracted by Sweden, Germany and Poland and onboard installations have already been commissioned.
Saab Bofors Dynamics, Sweden, and Diehl BGT Defence, Germany, have a cooperation agreement encompassing development, production and marketing of the RBS15 Mk3.
