Saab increases safety for rail travellers
When Banverket in Sweden concentrated on improved safety on the Bohusbanan, the stretch between Gothenburg and Uddevalla, they chose to collaborate with Saab. Saab is the main contractor for the delivery of centralised traffic control, an automated safety system. The contract is valued at 164 MSEK and the delivery will be completed during 2010.
“This is one of the largest projects we have negotiated in the last 25 years and we are doing it for both traffic and safety reasons. That we selected Saab is partially a price issue, and partially an issue of delivery capacity. We know that Saab have delivered similar projects effectively”, says Christer Löfving, acting Regional Manager at the Western track region. At present, safety monitoring of traffic on the Gothenburg – Uddevalla stretch is carried out manually. With the safety system from Saab, rail travellers of the future will not only be able to travel more safely but also more easily because the system allows expansion in commuter traffic between the cities. “Winning this deal is further evidence that customers value our capacity to manage the whole affair, from project planning to commissioning. We assume a system responsibility”, says Anders Nyman, Divisional manager for Traffic Systems at Saab Communication. The overall contract not only involves signal and telecoms installations but also track, heat exchanger installation, cable laying, installation of marshalling yard lighting, cable switchgear boxes, electrical power and remote controls and covers the project planning, delivery of equipment and material, ground, track and installation work and commissioning of the installations. Saab is carrying out the deal in a consortium with the Norwegian company Baneservice A/S whose share is 30 percent. Saab Communication, a business unit within Saab, offers qualified communication services and robust tele-, data- and radio communications solutions for the defence, public safety, telecoms and traffic infrastructure areas – nationally and internationally.
