Saab Aircraft Takes the Market for Saab 340 TAWS

Saab Aircraft Takes the Market for Saab 340 TAWS The recent order for Saab Aircraft's Terrain Awareness and Warning System (TAWS) service bulletin, placed by North American Saab 340 operator Mesaba Airlines, gives Saab Aircraft a dominant position in the Saab 340 TAWS market, having won over 70 percent of the estimated worldwide total order volume. "With discussions on-going and several more Saab 340 operators both in the U.S. and in the rest of the world already in the pipeline, we expect to see total orders climb to over 90 percent in the very near future." says Saab Aircraft Sales Manager, Per Skogsberg. Robert Kline, Director of Sales and Marketing for Saab Aircraft of America continues, "With firm orders to date representing over 6 MUSD in revenue for Saab, this market remains a high priority for us. The latest order by Mesaba, won after thorough evaluation of competing alternatives, is a further stamp of approval on the Saab supplied modification. It simply proves the point that there is no better source, by any measure, of Saab 340 aircraft modifications than Saab Aircraft itself." Saab Aircraft is also pleased to announce that Chicago Express Airlines and AeroLitoral S.A. de C.V. have successfully completed the first TAWS installations in their Saab 340 aircraft. Mesaba Airlines, Inc, the latest TAWS customer in the U.S., plans to start installations in May. Several European and Pacific operators are also well along in the modification process. The Saab 340 TAWS modification, developed in partnership with Honeywell, is a fully integrated system that uses existing electronic displays to provide terrain data. The Honeywell supplied TAWS/EGPWS computer, with new functionality, replaces the existing GPWS computer. In operation the system provides the flight crew with a color display indicating height differences between obstacles and the aircraft. TAWS accomplishes this by comparing aircraft location with local terrain and manmade obstacles contained in the system database. Saab Aircraft AB, with offices in Linköping Sweden and Sterling, Virginia in the US supports and maintains the combined Saab 340 and Saab 2000 fleet of over 500 aircraft in service with operators around the world.
