Saab’s Radar Products Safeguard Society Through Both Civilian and Defense Solutions
From civilian air traffic management to advanced military applications, Saab’s radar technology ensures safety and security in diverse environments throughout our products' lifecycle.
Around the world, people make critical decisions every minute that impact the safety and security of others. Whether it’s warfighters landing military aircraft or air traffic control personnel orchestrating commercial aircraft operations, these operators must be equipped with the best available information as they make their decisions.
Saab has worked with its partners for decades to understand and meet their evolving surveillance needs. Today, the company supplies radars and sensors – along with service and training - to all branches of the U.S. military, the U.S. State Department and 45 airports across the country. These state-of-the art products and services are central to keeping people and society safe and safeguarding U.S. national security. Knowledge is power, and through Saab’s ever-advancing radar technology, we empower our customers with the information needed to make optimal decisions for mission success.
Pioneering Radar Solutions for Modern Military Needs
Saab first delivered the Sea Giraffe radar system to the U.S. Navy in 2005 on the USS Independence, providing a highly capable and cost-efficient 3D multi-mission radar. Since then, Saab has continuously built out the Giraffe family of radar systems with unique modifications for the U.S. military on both land and sea.
In 2019, Saab delivered the AN/SPN-50 radar to the USS Eisenhower to replace the previous AN/SPN 43C radars, which had been in service since the mid-1960s. The SPN-50, which is based on the Sea Giraffe Agile Multi-Beam radar, provides several new advantages to the USS Eisenhower, including:
· Improved aircraft detection and tracking supporting air traffic control
· Improved system availability to support continuous operations
Saab is committed to working with partners to build the best solutions for their needs; this collaborative spirit extends beyond the Giraffe radar family.
To protect our U.S. military through both calm seas and open combat, Saab is dedicated to continuously advancing its product solutions to enhance mission safety and operational success.
Civilian Radars: Enhancing Air Traffic Control Across the Nation
At Saab, we believe it is a human right to feel safe. Saab’s cutting-edge radar and sensor technology is used by airports around the world to monitor air traffic operations, helping ensure passengers arrive at their destinations safely.
Saab's Air Traffic Management (ATM) systems are currently operating at dozens of U.S. airports and nearly one hundred airports around the world. These systems are used by Air Navigation Service Providers to enhance safety at many of the world’s busiest transportation hubs.
The Aerobahn platform enables airport and airline stakeholders to manage airport ramp and apron operations more efficiently and effectively. Continuous technological advancement for the Aerobahn platform has been critical to the system’s continued success. For example, Aerobahn is now integrated with Saab’s Digital Tower Solutions, Saab’s SAFE event management system, and incorporates state-of-the-art technologies like computer vision and machine learning.
Recently, Saab expanded our relationship with the FAA and is deploying new systems at more airports across the U.S. through the Surface Awareness Initiative (SAI). Saab’s cloud-based SAI system is already deployed at Nashville International Airport and under contract for three more airports.
This system addresses a critical need and establishes a cost-effective path to provide air traffic controllers at every U.S. airport with the advanced class of safety tools that they and their passengers deserve.
Integrating Innovation and Partnership
By prioritizing safety and technological innovation, Saab ensures that both civilian and military partners receive solutions that meet their specific needs, service and training that helps them achieve their mission, and new technology that anticipates future challenges.
Whether through the rapid deployment of ATC systems or the enhancement of naval radar capabilities, Saab’s investments in safety and technological development support our customers and partners, as well as our ongoing mission to keep people and society safe.
