Saab delivers fourth GlobalEye to the UAE

In April, Saab has delivered another GlobalEye Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), marking the delivery of the fourth advanced AEW&C aircraft to the UAE in just four years. The UAE has ordered a total of five GlobalEye aircraft from Saab.

GlobalEye is an advanced multi-domain AEW&C solution with an array of active and passive sensors that provide long-range detection and identification of objects in the air, at sea and over land. By providing real-time information to units in air forces, armies and navies, GlobalEye enables enhanced situational awareness of the surrounding areas and early detection of threats.

Regardless of operating during peacetime, in crisis or maybe even at full conflict – having Saab’s Airborne Early Warning & Control (AEW&C) solution GlobalEye is key to success since it provides a great advantage to any nation protecting its national and territorial integrity. GlobalEye can work alone or be easily integrated with other national assets.

The core of GlobalEye and the basis of its ability to provide cross-domain exchange and connectivity, is founded primarily on two things. The first is a powerful command and control system for multi-domain surveillance and real-time information. The second is a range of both active and passive sensors capable of handling all threats, in every domain – anything from electronic warfare threats to hypersonic missiles, stealth fighters and small, slow and low flying objects.

The high delivery pace in the GlobalEye programme is testament to our unique in-house capability which means we control the entire process, from development to integration. The UAE has ordered a total of five GlobalEye aircraft from Saab, with the initial contract signed in 2015 and an order for two additional aircraft received in 2021.

When joint forces act together it is not only different people and units that are involved. It also means that many different systems and systems-of-systems must work together – everything from communications and sensor systems to weapons and command and control systems. The key for creating such an information advantage in multi-domain operations is to allow all forces involved to integrate their information and sensor data into a common network and a common picture.

The AEW&C solution creates, maintains and continuously updates the air, sea and ground situational pictures and share them with friendly forces. This means that sensors and assets can share information and situational pictures effectively and rapidly, and even act on target data from another asset.

Airborne ultra-long range sensor system

As a command centre, the true strength of GlobalEye becomes evident when all multi-domain produced information is uploaded, combined and fused. The massive amount of data managed by GlobalEye need to be processed quickly and efficiently to enable instant identification of patterns and deviations that may affect the course of events. AI-functionality and machine learning allow for powerful real-time data analysis and constitute a strong complement to the intelligence that is built into the command-and-control system.

Multi-domain AEW&C solution

With its mix of modern active and passive sensors, GlobalEye provides long-range detection and identification of objects in air, at sea and over land. GlobalEye is the only AEW&C solution on the market that can provide long-range air-, sea- and land surveillance in real time, from a single platform. GlobalEye is an airborne solution that will support government- and military forces with real time-information.

The connectivity across all the domains creates unique tactical, operational and strategic benefits, providing commanders with powerful decision support and enabling them to establish and share a trusted, consistent and real-time recognized situational picture. It is important for decision makers to have the correct and timely information rather than every single detail. At an operational altitude of more than 35.000 feet, the airborne multi-domain solution can detect, identify and track very large amounts of different objects and signals at distances of up 650 km.

GlobalEye is the only AEW&C solution on the market today that can provide long-range air, sea and land surveillance in real-time from a single platform. As an airborne ultra-long range sensor system, GlobalEye can warn and command other sensors in the network and through this extend the time for planning and implementation of countermeasures.
