Technical Writer

The position is responsible for developing a range of technical documentation (print and online).

Specific Accountabilities

  • Support the Technical Writer Team Lead with Technical Writer assigned tasks including the following;
    • Review and edit documents from technical writer peers and other team members.
    • Work closely with Software and/or Hardware Engineers and Software Developers to develop Operator, Maintenance and Software User Manuals documentation.
    • Assist in preparation of ILS documentation and plans.
    • Validate documentation against the product.
  • Follow relevant company/project review and approval processes.
  • Comply with legislation and Company policies, processes and instructions, including those relating to non-discrimination, safety and duty of care and the quality management system.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Experience

Essential

  • 2+ years of relevant experience in technical writing in manufacturing, technology, engineering or defence industries.
  • Familiar with best practice and trends in Technical Writing in particular, as implemented in the defence industry.
  • Proven writing skills with the ability to write in plain English.
  • Proficient in the use of technical publication authoring software tools.
  • Experience using S1000D or Adobe FrameMaker to develop and maintain documentation.
  • Broad experience with Windows applications and Microsoft Office.
  • Experience with using Microsoft Word to an advanced level, including writing and editing large and/or complex documents, developing styles and templates.
  • Experience as a Technical Writer in a hardware and software development environment.
  • Experience with using graphic tools for producing simple drawings and diagrams.
  • Experience with using Adobe Acrobat to create PDF files.

Desirable

  • Experience as an Electronics Technician or Combat Systems Operator in the Defence industry.
  • Experience with web-based publishing and developing online help.
  • Experience with following military documentation practices and standards.
  • Understanding of the LSA tasks and the relationship between LSA outputs and technical publication development.
  • Understanding software development activities and the relationship between SW development outputs and technical publication development.

Educational Qualifications and Professional Memberships

  • Tertiary qualifications in Writing, English, Communication, or equivalent industry / defence experience (desirable).

  • Ability to work with others in a team environment, including sharing knowledge and experiences.
  • Ability to undertake tasks with minimal supervision whilst maintaining communication with own Supervisor.
  • Ability to manage self in terms of time and process, exercise initiative, completes tasks in a competent and timely manner and demonstrate professional ethics.
  • Ability to adapt to new tasks, technologies, processes and procedures.
  • Good problem solving skills and the ability to develop creative and innovative alternative solutions.
