Position Overview:
We are seeking a skilled, experienced, and motivated Backend Engineer to join our MDA team, located at our San Diego office, to take ownership of all backend solutions of the MDA platform. The ideal candidate will have experience working in an AI/Data-Driven spatiotemporal GIS ecosystems in the context of IoT applications, ideally in a B2B setting. The successful candidate will work closely with the MDA platform Chief architect and play a crucial role, as an Individual contributor in applying sound engineering principles to the overall platform architecture and specifically in the planning, design, development, implementation, test/evaluation, and maintenance of all backend functions. In this role you will be leveraging the best data-engineering and cloud native tools and methods for providing value to our customers and enhancing platform process efficiencies. You will also be working with internal cross functional teams and benchmarking external vendors for assisting in build vs buy decisions. As part of an agile team, you will also be involved in creating code, performing code reviews, designing test and evaluation methods. You will also take part in product development conversations, offering customer insights to align our efforts with scalable revenue opportunities.
Roles and Responsibilities include:
Lead the technical vision and all efforts on the design, development, and deployment strategies of MDA specific data/AI solutions, with a PoC to be demonstrated within the first 6 months.
Take ownership in the planning, design, development, implementation, test/evaluation, and maintenance of all backend functions of the maritime domain awareness platform.
Design, develop, deploy, and maintain ETL pipelines within our cloud infrastructure to move data from various sources to storage solutions such as data warehouses and data lakes. Perform data cleansing, transformation, and enrichment to enhance data quality and usability.
Research, benchmark, and develop, as needed, an appropriate spatiotemporal geospatial data base, ensuring MDA process efficiency, data quality and integrity.
Contribute to the design and development of any public facing API’s as well as internal production tools.
Support documentation for data architecture, process flows, and data dictionaries to ensure consistency and maintainability.
Adopt an automation first approach and be extremely diligent about quality and engineering excellence.
Perform testing, analysis, and scaling with application to backend software features like database, APIs, and server-scripts.
Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team consisting of AI researchers, developers, product managers, UX designers.
Stay aligned with state-of-the-art developments and be open to research into evolving data management systems and architectures.
Communicate and collaborate with stakeholders and users to gain insight and relay information.
Solve structural technical issues of large scopes and complexity.
Recommend improvements and upgrades for backend products to clients and stakeholders.
Identify and resolve efficiency impediments and technical debt. Participate in developing data solutions, services and engineering best practices like code coverage, unit testing.
Translate customers’ needs into company priorities is important: this means supporting the Customer Success, Business Development, and Sales teams closely, working together with Operations and Engineering to deliver results.
Engage with customers and vendors to ensure project cost, schedule and technical requirements are met.
Stay informed about emergent technologies and refresh product to maintain market/segment lead.
Identify opportunities for product improvements that improve overall program affordability, as well as opportunities in adjacent market spaces.
Socialize key milestones with industry, academia, and government through conference presentations, technical paper publications, and media relations.
Support proposal writing against Government RFP’s including DoD, NSF, ONR, AFRL etc.
Support leadership with strategic planning, benchmarking, and operations reviews.
Compensation Range: $151,500-$196,900
The compensation range provided is a general guideline. Required Skills/Experience:
B.S. in Data Science/Engineering, computer Science Geo-spatial/Geo-informatics or a related analytical discipline with at least 5 years backend development work experience or M.S in, Data Science/Engineering, computer Science Geo-spatial/Geo-informatics or a related analytical discipline with at least 3 years backend development work experience.
Strong proficiency in back-end technology stack for IoT systems, including databases and DBMS, backend programming, Frameworks and Server technologies.
Demonstrated experience in databases (structured, unstructured, distributed,) and DBMS’s and specifically, strong experience with spatiotemporal databases and GIS data will be highly valued.
Strong proficiency in one or more backend RDMS database tools such as MySQL, PostgresSQL etc.
Strong proficiency in one or more back-end programming languages such as Python, Java, etc.
Strong proficiency in one or more back-end frameworks such as Django, Symfony, Node.js, Laravel etc.
Demonstrated experience with ETL tools, orchestration solutions, and data warehouses such as Redshift, Snowflake, etc.
Demonstrated experience with one or more cloud (AWS, GCP, Azure) infrastructure management.
Demonstrated experience in containerization technologies (Docker/Kubernetes).
Demonstrated experience setting up CI/CD, monitoring, and alerting solutions.
Demonstrated experience with automation solutions (IaC) such as terraform.
Strong proficiency and experience with technology integrations and RESTful APIs.
Demonstrated knowledge of agile methodologies and DevOps practices.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a quality and engineering excellence mindset.
Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to build effective working relationships is a must, especially across government and industry.
Excellent oral and written communication skills with a proven ability to communicate well with peers and different levels of management and the customer.
Strong work ethic and self-motivate and pro-active in seeking out the best solution/s.
Must exhibit leadership for executing practical application of engineering processes on a development program and maintaining engineering rigor while balancing cost, technical, and schedule.
U.S. Citizenship is required for this role.
Desired (good-to-have) Skills/Experience:
Familiarity with new DB architectures such as Graph DB’s, Data Mesh, Data Fabric etc.
Familiarity with MLOps platforms, including Sagemaker, Azure ML studio, Databricks, etc.
Familiarity with ML/DL libraries including, PyTorch, Scikitlearn, Tensorflow, Transformers etc.
Proficiency in JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and React as a modern front-end framework.
Familiarity/experience in orchestration technologies for data transformation between front end and backend.
Full stack, back-end or front-end development is a plus but not necessary.
Direct experience with maritime systems and naval operations with US DoD contractors is desirable.
Experience writing winning proposals against Government RFP’s including DoD, NSF, ONR, AFRL etc.
