Closing date: 3 November 2024

Saab is a place where teamwork makes things fly. Literally. Join us and experience our supportive and friendly workplace.

Your role

Background

Commonly used in air traffic control, a primary surveillance radar system detects aircraft targets by transmitting electromagnetic waves which are then being reflected back. The measurement of these reflected waves allows for detection of targets and estimations of their positions. However, the received reflected signals contains no information about the target identity.

To complement a primary surveillance radar and address its limitations, a secondary surveillance radar is used. Compared to a primary radar, a secondary radar operates by transmit interrogations. A target that receives the interrogation can then transmit a coded reply containing its identity and other relevant information. One common application of these systems is IFF (Identification Friend or Foe). Developed during World War II to prevent friendly fire incidents, this technology is today widely used in both civilian and military applications.

As air traffic continues to grow, it becomes increasingly important to accurately and efficiently estimate the position of a target, corresponding to the direction of arrival (DOA) of the received signal. To this end, signal processing techniques can be used to obtain DOA estimations in different noise and interference scenarios. To enhance performance, different beamforming techniques can also be applied, where the receiving antenna in the radar is used in such a way that the reception of signals is enhanced in some directions and reduced in others.

Project description

The main objective of the thesis project is to analyze and compare different DOA estimation algorithms for a secondary surveillance radar system with digital beamforming. More specifically, this includes an evaluation of the accuracy and performance of algorithms utilizing the signal subspace, the vector space spanned by the incoming signals. Examples of such algorithms are ESPRIT and MUSIC. Their performance can also be compared to other methods, such as maximum likelihood estimations. The simulations shall be performed for different intensities and distributions of signals in the air.

Other areas that could be explored include studies on adaptive beamforming algorithms as well as analyzing ways of handling phase and amplitude imperfections in the system. Moreover, an evaluation of the performance with regards to the transmitted interrogations could be performed.

Your profile

The work is suitable for students in the final phase of their master’s education in Engineering Physics, Engineering Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or similar, with an interest for signal processing and mathematical modelling. The project requires programming skills in MATLAB or Python. Courses in signal processing and statistical analysis are meritorious.
