Hardware Engineer - Mechanical

The role

As part of our Naval Combat Systems group, the Hardware Engineer (Mechanical) will mainly focus on the design, development, documentation and management of physical testing and/or simulation of a wide range of mechanical and electro-mechanical equipment within the Naval Combat Systems Hardware Engineering business unit.

Further, the successful candidate will:

  • Involvement in all phases of Research & Development and current product development from requirements gathering to detailed design for new products, systems and supporting items
  • Manage own performance when undertaking engineering activities with regards to meeting the assigned project requirements
  • Ensure all mechanical design and physical and/or virtual testing is adequately documented according to the appropriate requirements/standards
  • Conducting and/or managing outsourced virtual simulations such as Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
  • Ensure products meet all customer and company requirements in terms of schedule, cost, safety, serviceability, maintainability and quality

Flexible work arrangements such as hybrid work from home / office will be considered for this role.

About you

Your skills and experience will include:

  • Understanding of the lifecycles of small to medium sized hardware defence projects and appreciation of associated processes and levels of responsibilities
  • Competent with using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software (preferably Creo)
  • Experience with using Product Lifecycle Management software tools (preferably Windchill)
  • Knowledge and/or experience with the use of simulation software such as ANSYS, Creo Simulate or similar
  • Demonstrated ability to read, understand and develop Saab specific complex engineering drawings, diagrams, specifications and standards


As Defence security clearance is required for this role, applicants will be required to hold an Australian Defence Security Clearance to NV1 level or have the ability to gain one.
