Combat Aircraft Monthly, December 2014 'Pitch Black 2014', which took place in Australia during August, featured six Royal Thai Air Force Gripens (see also Saab Daily News Report of August 11).
A write-up in the latest issue of Combat Aircraft Monthly notes that Thailand's pilots were "effusive in their praise" for the plane. The Gripens are in a "different world" in terms of their avionics, compared to the country's F-16s, says Wing commander Watanasrimongkol.
With participants divided into traditional Blue and Red forces, the Gripens were given a chance to play the 'bad guys', continues the report.
The Thai pilots opted to fly with three external fuel tanks, significantly increasing endurance. Some missions took up to two-and-a-half hours, from engine start to shut-down.
