The Counter IED (C-IED) Training System is a fully instrumented Tactical Engagement System (TES) developed to meet the changing training needs of current and future IED threats and the wider aspects ot Counter Insurgency (COIN).

Unique Training

The C-IED Clearance Trainer (CCT) uniquely enables our collocated training advisors to provide objective feedback on individual and collective performance in the field.

The instrumentation system tracks the movement of the execise participants, vehicles and mine detectors and displays the action at EXCON for During and After Action Review.

C-IED Clearance Trainer

The C-IED Clearance Trainer (CCT) uniquely enables our collocated training advisors to provide objective feedback on individual and collective performance in the field. By using our unique and progressive feedback system within the trainer we measure our ability to improve the individual’s use of the C-IED equipment, squad command and control and effective employment of Tactics, Techniques and Procedures (TTPs). Previously this has all been done by subjective judgement by the instructor.

This additional tool provides any instructor with a far better understanding of the trainees’ level of performance, enabling highly effective training simulation and After Action Reviews (AARs) By being omnipresent throughout the C-IED training continuum and even with the force on operations our system and instructors can rapidly adapt to any threats and resulting counter-measures and feed this change across the training system. CCT is unique in that it offers the very best of training and validation and is delivered to the point of need.

Training Courses

Saab is a leading provider of instrumented training to the British Army’s pre-deployment training and train troops around the world.

Building on the success of other Saab packages such as the Counter-IED Trainer (CCT) and GAMER system Saab currently offers a wide range of courses spread across all aspects of Counter Terrorism. Courses range from basic Life Saving Skills such as Driver Training and First Aid to the more complex courses including High Risk Search and IED Disposal.

All courses are delivered by experienced time served instructors who are passionate, committed and enthusiastic about training. All instructors have extensive military experience having served operationally around the world.

Instrumentation and Excon

The instrumentation system tracks the movement of the exercise participants, vehicles and mine detectors and displays the action at EXCON for During and After Action Reviews. The system simulates direct/indirect weapon effects, IEDs and Electronic Counter Measures (ECM). Further it remotely records video streamed from the exercise together with combatnet radio communications. The EXCON is a ruggedized portable console that is the command and control device for the instrumentation system. Further, the EXCON can be a source of accumulative data from exercises/trials to reveal trends using its Information Management System.

Multi Detector Sensor (MDS)

The validation of individual IED detection skills forms the first layer of the C-IED Trainer. A Multi Detector Sensor (MDS) is attached to the shaft of the operator’s mine detector to provide dynamic feedback of his technique thus enabling him to achieve the most effective sweep of the detector head. The sensor sends very accurate movement data back to EXCON where it records and tracks the spacing and coverage of the individuals in a route clearance team. Combined with video streaming from head mounted video cameras, the performance of each member of the clearance team and their combined effectiveness can be analysed for the EXCON AAR.

MDS - Training Feedback

The MDS accurately detects movement of the mine-detector over the ground and this is visually presented at EXCON for use in student AARs. The key movements of: Sweep Arc, Sweep Speed, height above the ground and Swoop provide the vital feedback to enable optimum detection techniques to be learnt. The visual presentation also indicates areas of the ground that have been missed. The MDS has a push-button to enable a suspect reading to be recorded by the operator and then presented as a red dot marker on the EXCON display - again providing rich feedback for the AAR

Electronic Counter Measures Simulator

The effects of Electronic Counter Measures (ECM) can be precisely simulated, recorded and validated. The simulated ECM acts as an instrumented entity and a protective “bubble” can be assigned to either a dismount or a vehicle. The size of the “bubble” can be adjusted to meet classified parameters. The ECM simulator eliminates the use of real ECM equipment during training.

IED Simulators

Saab’s instrumented IED simulator simulates the lethality effects of an IED and provides a safe visual and audio effect of an explosion. The IED simulator can be detonated via a command wire or remotely by radio. The radio detonation simulation can be jammed by the ECM Simulator. The location of the hidden IED is portrayed in EXCON together with the location of the detonator device

Roadside bomb simulator

The unit is a manually triggered effect device that uses pressurised air and smoke powder, providing a high-output, realistic explosion sound with a smoke signature.

IED Advanced Simulator

The IED advanced simulator is designed to be fully integrated into instrumented scenarios, with the focus on providing training for convoy operations. The kit simulates the IED threat as well as training the appropriate countermeasure procedures.
