The Philippine Air Force (PAF) is currently evaluating Gripen for its MRF (Multi-fighter Role) Project to enhance the existing fleet of 12 South Korean KAI FA-50PH Fighting Eagle aircraft, reports defpost.com.

“One of the aircraft being evaluated is from Sweden (Saab Gripen) and the other is the American [Lockheed Martin] F-16V,” confirmed Philippine Secretary of National Defense Delfin Lorenzana recently.

The Philippine MRF project is part of Horizon Two of the Armed Forces of the Philippines Modernization Program which began in 2013. The program consists of three horizons. Horizon One, which ended in 2017, mostly involved purchases of military hardware to tackle internal security challenges.

The Horizon Two of the program aims to acquire more equipment for external defense. The program also requires that the final aircraft chosen by Philippines should be able to integrate with the existing radar systems of the PAF.
