Prepared for CBRN Threat

Did you know? Airplanes can be exposed to various kinds of contamination. For SwAF Gripen and their pilots, a CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear) defense procedure is carried out in order to keep them contamination-free and ready for new assignments.

Saab, in collaboration with the Swedish Armed Forces, FMV (Swedish Defense Materiel Administration) and FOI (Total Defense Research Institute), one of Europe’s leading institute in defense and security, has developed a remediation concept to strengthen the defense and security of the country by stopping any contamination and threats at air bases.

Towards the end of August at the Vidsel Air Base, SwAF presented a step-by-step demonstration for the Czech Air Force on how to carry out the process of decontamination of personnel and materials that may have been exposed to CBRN threats.

The latest MS20-configured SwAF Gripens have customized CBRN filters mounted in the cabin which filters incoming air and protects the pilot against CBRN threats. According to the report, the Czech Gripens, as a part of their MS20 update, will also soon be equipped to handle CBRN threats. “I am glad we got this opportunity to see this CBRN protection demonstration. It will help us build new capabilities and I hope we can continue this cooperation,” says Jan Beneš, Head of Delegation from the Czech Republic.
