About the role
We are seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to play a critical role in the design, integration, and sustainment of advanced, software-intensive defence systems.
This is a hands-on technical leadership position suited to an experienced engineer who enjoys solving complex problems, influencing system architecture, and mentoring others—while remaining close to the engineering detail.
You will work across the full systems lifecycle on high-impact programs, contributing directly to capability that supports Australia’s national security priorities.

The opportunity:
As a Senior Systems Engineer, you will be a key contributor to engineering delivery—owning system outcomes from requirements through to validation and in-service support.
You will operate as a technical authority within the team, partnering with project engineering, integration teams, and stakeholders to ensure robust, compliant, and high-performing system solutions.
As part of your specific responsibilities, you will:
Systems Engineering Lifecycle
- Lead requirements elicitation, analysis, and management, ensuring traceability and quality
- Ensure alignment with ASDEFCON and defence engineering frameworks
- Drive engineering governance across design, integration, and validation activities
System Design & Architecture
- Develop and review system architectures and detailed design solutions
- Facilitate design reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR) and ensure adherence to best practice
- Produce and maintain high-quality engineering artefacts and documentation
Integration, Testing & Validation
- Lead and support system integration across hardware and software domains
- Develop and execute verification and validation strategies
- Analyse results, resolve defects, and ensure systems meet operational performance criteria
Implementation & Deployment
- Provide technical guidance during system build and implementation
- Support installation, configuration, and maintenance activities
- Deliver technical documentation, training materials, and user support
Stakeholder & Program Interface
- Work closely with Project Engineering to define scope, manage risks, and align delivery outcomes
- Engage with internal and external stakeholders across engineering and program teams
- Support working groups, demonstrations, and customer engagements
Leadership & Mentorship
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to capability uplift within the team
- Support planning, estimation, and tracking of engineering activities
- Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement
About you
Your skills and experience will include:
Experience
- Strong experience in systems engineering within complex, software-intensive environments
- Background in defence, aerospace, or other safety-critical industries highly regarded
- Proven experience across the full engineering lifecycle
Technical Expertise
- Solid understanding of systems engineering principles, integration, and V&V
- Experience working within ASDEFCON environments
- Exposure to networking and network security concepts
- Hands-on experience with tools such as DOORS, Cameo Systems Modeler, Cradle or similar
Leadership & Delivery
- Ability to mentor engineers and influence technical direction
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities
- A proactive approach to problem-solving and delivery
Communication
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to engage both technical and non-technical stakeholders effectively
Qualifications
- Degree in Engineering (Systems, Electrical, Mechanical, Software or similar)
- Professional certifications such as CPEng (Engineers Australia) or INCOSE ASEP/CSEP/ESEP are highly regarded

As a defence security clearance is required for this role, applicants will be required to hold an Australian Defence Security Clearance to baseline/NV1/NV2 level or have the ability to gain one. Information including past and present nationality and citizenship may be requested to check eligibility for access to materials controlled under various export control regimes, including ITAR.
