ATCA (the Air Traffic Control Association) and CANSO (the Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation) announced as the winners of the inaugural Maverick Awards presented by World ATM Congress. The Awards – which received over 100 nominations in this first year – showcase the brightest ideas for the future, recognise positive contributions to the environment and conservation, celebrate cooperation between partners and stakeholders, and promote overall excellence in the aviation industry.
“It’s fantastic to be recognised by CANSO and the global ATM industry by receiving this prestigious Maverick Award for ATM Innovation in 2020 for our work together with Scandinavian Mountain Airport to introduce an ‘on-demand’ Digital TWR Service from our centre in Sundsvall. But it wouldn’t have been possible without the true cooperation among so many entities and teams. Everybody was focused on the same common goal: whatever happens, get it in operation by the 22nd of December! Thanks to all involved,” says Per Ahl, CEO and President of Saab Digital Air Traffic Solutions.
Saab Digital Air Traffic Solutions and Scandinavian Mountains Airport received the Maverick Award this year in the category Innovation. The project was a state-of-the-art, green-field airport equipped with digital tower services from a remote tower centre in Sundsvall, Sweden. Controllers are now able to provide services on-demand from a digital tower centre shared by three other airports. With Scandinavian Mountains Airport being a seasonal airport, Saab Digital Air Traffic Solutions’ remote tower concept is a true enabler for efficient, cost-effective ATC services for the region.
“This award confirms how important the close work between the Airport and ATC is to achieving the goal of providing safe and efficient services for travelling customers; in our case a whole new concept of a seasonal airport for ski lovers, direct to the slopes of Sweden and Norway,” says Gunnar Lenman, CEO of Scandinavian Mountains Airport.
