Saab Digital Air Traffic Solutions (SDATS) has been selected by Swedish Air Navigation Service Provider, LFV to provide remote digital air traffic control to the airports in Malmö in the South of Sweden, Östersund, Umeå and Kiruna situated well above the polar circle. The distance between Malmö and Kiruna is 1750 km. The contract also includes a new centre for remote air traffic control services with capability to remotely operate over 20 digitally connected airports at the same time.

The solution provided by SDATS constitutes the second generation of digital air traffic control, and the holistic concept covers everything from technology to airport control, an integrated and centralised approach capability, an integrated training concept along with improved planning and technical supervision tools. The centre will be prepared to introduce multiple airport control, right now being validated for operational use at LFV’s current remote tower centre in Sundsvall.

Together will LFV, SDATS will be able to build a dedicated, efficient and flexible Centre of towers that can support both an efficient ATC service but also provide the airport operators with critical information about its network of airports in real time.

The new centre will be located nearby the current En-route centre or ATCC in Stockholm, thus LFV and the Centre of Towers will be able to re-use existing facilities and support functions. This will increase the efficiency even further. The first airport will be in operation by 2019/2020 with the implementation taking place gradually. The experience from the current three pilot airports in expected to significantly reduce the time for implementation and operational approval. SDATS has previously provided solutions to the airports in Örnsköldsvik, Sundsvall and Linköping and has also signed contracts with London City Airport and Cranfield University in United Kingdom.
