Saab and LFV Establish New Digital Remote Air Traffic Control Company

Defence and security company Saab and LFV (the Swedish Air Navigation Service Provider) have today signed an agreement to establish a new company: Saab Digital Air Traffic Solutions AB. The new company will market, sell, develop and operate products and services for remote air traffic control. Saab will be the majority owner with 59 per cent of shares, with LFV holding 41 per cent.

The establishment of Saab Digital Air Traffic Solutions AB will bolster the position of Saab and LFV at the forefront of digital solutions within air traffic control in the global market. With digital and integrated traffic control, high technological systems will transfer information from sensors to the air traffic control centre, independent of geography. This will lead to increased flexibility, higher safety and more effective travelling for passengers. It will also reduce costs for air traffic control. The company will commence operations no earlier than 1 September 2016.

"The new company will bring together Saab's world-leading technological know-how and global organisation with LFV's unique expertise in delivering innovative, digital and certified operational solutions within air traffic control. This will allow the company to serve as a leading partner to guide customers through the entire process for the successful conversion to digital air traffic services," says Micael Johansson, head of Saab business area Surveillance

“This will strengthen our ability to lead, develop and drive the digitalisation of air traffic management across the sector,” says LFVs Director General Olle Sundin. “Together we can both address and drive a digital transformation and the demands of the market.”

Saab and LFV have, owing to a productive partnership, initiated the world's first system for remote-controlled, digital air traffic control - Remote Tower. The system is a vital driving-force behind continued innovative, digital development within air traffic control. Since April 2015, the airport in Örnsköldsvik has been controlled via the LFV Remote Tower Centre in Sundsvall.

An agreement to establish the new company has been signed by Saab and LFV. The Swedish minister for infrastructure, Anna Johansson was also present during the contract signing.

The transaction is subject to approval by the Swedish Competition Authority. This approval is expected during July/August 2016. Thereafter the formation of the company will be completed.
