"This important milestone marks the formal start to the Brazilian Gripen NG programme. We will now work full speed ahead to ensure timely deliveries of Gripen NG to Brazil. Our partnership with Brazilian industry strengthens Saab's position in Latin America and supports our strategy for growth through industrial co-operation," said Håkan Buskhe, President and CEO of Saab.
The deal with Brazil includes an industrial co-operation programme that will transfer unique and advanced technologies and know-how to Brazilian industrial and institutional parties with the objective of developing national capabilities. The associated industrial co-operation contract, which was signed in October 2014, also came into effect on 10 September.
Gripen NG deliveries to the Brazilian Air Force will be undertaken from 2019 to 2024.
Earlier this year, Saab participated in the Rionegro Air Show, F-AIR, and presented the Gripen simulator. The Kfir pilots of the Colombian Air Force that tested it were pleasantly surprised by the versatility of the aircraft and its benefits. During the show, Saab and Colombia's Corporation of the Aeronautical Industry (CIAC) signed a cooperation agreement to strengthen the country's aviation industry.
"This agreement will allow Saab and CIAC to exchange knowledge to improve technological innovation and maintenance services. It is a very important opportunity for Saab to expand in Colombia and it will greatly benefit the industry in the region," said Fredrik Gustafson, Saab's Vice President and Head of Sales and Marketing for Latin America.
In November, Saab returns to Colombia to the Expodefensa fair in Corferias, Bogotá, to present the Gripen NG aircraft and other innovations in defence products.
Saab's Gripen is a multi-role combat aircraft capable of undertaking the full range of air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, including specialist roles such as intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance (ISTAR) and electronic warfare. Gripen is equipped with the most modern sensors and mission systems, it can be armed with any air-launched weapon that a customer requires, and integration of new capabilities is speedy and affordable. Gripen is easily deployable, with a very low maintenance and support footprint coupled with high reliability.
