  • The backbone of Indonesia’s air defence since the 1980s has been Saab’s RBS 70 Mk 1 and Mk 2 and the Giraffe 40 system as the sensor. The system´s unique capabilities, reliability and very low life-cycle cost has been appreciated by demanding users from Army, Air Force and Navy/Marines and is today operational on all continents in the most exacting environmental conditions, such as deserts, tropics and the Arctic.

    The backbone of Indonesia’s air defence since the 1980s has been Saab’s RBS 70 Mk 1 and Mk 2 and the Giraffe 40 system as the sensor. With more than 1,600 missile systems and more than 17,000 missiles sold, the RBS 70 air defence missile system has been deployed effectively by more than 20 users.     The Indonesian Chief of Navy, Admiral Ade Supandi, recently visited the Swedish Armed Forces Naval base in Karlskrona in the southern part of Sweden, from 8 – 9 June, 2015. He was welcomed by the Chief of Navy of the Royal Swedish Navy, Rear Admiral Jan Thörnqvist and spent a day and a half at the base learning more about the Composite Ships currently in operation by the Royal Swedish Navy.

The officers were undergoing training in Swedish innovation systems and developing capabilities for maritime security in littoral environments. The program is an outcome of a Memorandum of Agreement with the Indonesian Navy signed in February 2015 at the Surabaya Naval base.
