General Motors South Africa is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Motors Corporation, the world's largest vehicle manufacturer. Founded in 1908, GM has been the global automotive sales leader since 1931 and employs about 325 000 people globally. Today, the corporation has manufacturing operations in 32 countries and its vehicles are sold in more than 190 countries.
South Africa has a volume in excess of 400 000 units making it GM's largest market in Africa and the second largest in the Latin America, Africa and the Middle East (LAAM) region.
In June 2004, GM South Africa was awarded the distribution rights for SAAB vehicles in the country and the company began implementing a programme to provide full support for the brand. This includes the roll out of a dealer service network to function as approved service agents for the brand. At present, SAAB customers are supported by Sandton SAAB in Gauteng, the Reeds Group in Cape Town and in the Durban area by the Key Group.
GM South Africa is responsible for the brand not only in the country but also in a number of South African export markets. Plans are in the pipeline to set up a network of domestic and export dealers to handle sales and service requirements in specific marketing regions.
SAAB Automobile AB in Sweden has committed resources to assist GM South Africa in strengthening its service networks. To this effect, a technical support team has been allocated to the country. Allied to this, GM South Africa has established a mobile service team, which is on call to support customers requiring specialised technical assistance. Customers may look forward to a full rage of exciting products, which is anticipated to soon be available in the local market via the expaned network.
