Ships continue to increase in size, whereas waterway infrastructure often stays the same for years on end. This means that the margin for error rapidly decreases. Saab’s precision navigation solutions is the most accurate system of its kind in the world. Marine pilots board a ship, click the receiver for ADX portable pilot units into place, and within minutes they are able to manoeuvre the ship – perhaps the size of an 80-story apartment building on its side – into a lock, with less than half a metre to spare on either side. The unit uses Qastor navigation software made by Saab’s Hydrographics unit, and it shows the traffic situation from the vessel traffic services system.
