To celebrate 40 years of being in India, FFV Ordnance, member of the Saab Group, presents the newly-developed next generation Carl-Gustaf M4 for the first time ever at a land defence exhibition in India, at Defexpo 2016. We asked some questions about this to the Head of FFV Ordnance in India, Bo Thörn.
This year FFV Ordnance celebrates 40 years of being in India. Can you tell us how you feel about showcasing the CGM4 for the first time at a land defence exhibition in India?
“I am very happy to be here at Defexpo and celebrate 40 years of being in India. Since 1976, FFV Ordnance and the Ordnance Factory Board have been cooperating for the production of the various Carl Gustaf weapon systems and its family of ammunition. We are looking forward to continue to build on and further deepen our four decade old cooperation. India is a very important market for us and we have a long track record of being in the country – for me this is very exciting.
What can you say about this new system, which was officially launched in late 2014?
The Carl-Gustaf M4 made its market debut in late 2014. It has all the effectiveness and versatility of the proven Carl-Gustaf system that has been in service worldwide for many years. The improved, lightweight design (weighing only about 7 kg) of Carl-Gustaf M4 offers significant mobility improvements to soldiers. The fact that the system is also compatible with future battlefield technology developments such as intelligent sighting systems and programmable ammunition makes it even better for Armed Forces that are looking for flexible and effective weapon systems.
Since the system was launched, how has the market reacted?
Since we launched the system, we have seen a tremendous interest in the market and we have already three customers for the system. In September 2015, we received the first order for the system, and we have since received orders from two additional countries for evaluation and qualification purposes. So it has been an amazing start, and I am not surprised - it is a game changer for soldiers out there, and more and more countries are contacting us and want to know more about the weapon system.
In what specific way would the Carl-Gustaf M4 improve the defence capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces?
Thanks to its light weight, the intelligent sight and the many ammunition types, the new Carl-Gustaf M4 is a perfect solution for the Indian Army. With this system they will have a lot of choices and much more accuracy and precision when needed. I really must point out the fact that the system is compatible with future battlefield technology developments, such as intelligent sighting systems and programmable ammunition. This is unique and something that would definitely increase their capability on the battlefield.
